From semiconductor to 4 MW

Power electronics, energy conversion, and intelligent systems — one team, under one roof, for over 75 years.

About the Department

We combine education, research and development in three areas: power electronics and drives, energy conversion, and intelligent systems and artificial intelligence.

  • Academic and educational activities are carried out as the Department of Power Electronics and Machines (KEV) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen — building on the tradition of the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering founded in 1949.
  • Research activities are conducted within the Research and Innovation Centre for Electrical Engineering (RICE) and in research projects, international collaboration and industry communication we operate under the unified identity RICE Power Lab

We cover the entire research chain — from characterisation of SiC and GaN semiconductors to validation of traction and drive systems up to 4 MW. Our results find application in transportation (road, rail, aerospace, marine), energy, robotics and industrial automation. We maintain long-term partnerships with leading industrial partners and actively participate in Horizon Europe projects and key national strategic programmes.

End-to-end expertise

Design, modelling and simulation

Design, modelling and simulation

From specification through mathematical modelling and finite element analysis to detailed CAD/CAM documentation. We model converters, electric machines, control systems and complete drives supported by high-performance computing infrastructure.

Control algorithm development

Control algorithm development

From low-level microcontroller firmware and communication buses to HMI interfaces and PC applications. We combine classical control methods with model predictive control, machine learning and Bayesian approaches.

Prototyping and manufacturing

Prototyping and manufacturing

Based on engineering designs, we build functional prototypes of converters, control systems, electric machines and complete drive assemblies. We have facilities for both mechanical manufacturing and electronics.

Testing and validation

Testing and validation up to 4 MW

We commission and test developed equipment in both laboratory and real operating conditions. Our testing infrastructure at 4 MW power level is unique in Central Europe.

Industry collaboration

Industry collaboration and technology transfer

We carry out contract research, joint development projects and technology transfer with leading industrial partners. We actively participate in Horizon Europe projects and national strategic programmes.
